Life Changing Event Launches New Career

Belo Miguel Cipriani began his career in Silicon Valley as a UNIX systems administrator. In this role, he quickly gained attention for his ability to build successful IT teams, ultimately leading him to transition into the tech recruiting space.

“I placed engineers,” said Cipriani, “at Google, Apple, eBay, Hitachi, and countless startups. What I liked the most about recruiting was seeing the big smiles on my candidate’s faces when they landed their dream job.”

Cipriani’s high-tech world was interrupted when, in 2007, he was assaulted by a group of men in San Francisco. He went through many surgeries, but, in the end, lost all of his vision.

“Blindness taught me to ask questions,” he said. “What’s that noise? What’s that smell? Why is so much tech inaccessible to people with disabilities?”

His questioning led to a series of award-winning books and a prize-winning syndicated column, as well as lectureships at Yale, University of San Francisco, and University of Wisconsin at Whitewater.

He was also named an agent of change by HuffPost and an ABC 7 Neighborhood Hero.

“I founded Oleb Media because I noticed that while many organizations want to be digitally inclusive, they lack the internal resources and time to address accessibility testing and remediation needs,” Cipriani said.

“We live in an era,” he continued, “where it’s more cost effective for businesses to outsource their accounting, administrative, and marketing requirements. So, why wouldn’t you hire a vendor that could help you with all of your access needs?”

In 2016, Cipriani relocated to Minneapolis to be near his family, and has quickly immersed himself in the Twin Cities academic, disability, and business communities. He runs a publishing house for writers with disabilities and teaches part time at Metropolitan State University.
